IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Faruk (Frank)
Yacoub El-Yussif
March 5, 1934 – August 14, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Faruk (Frank) Yacoub El-Yussif , who left us on August 14, 2024, at the age of 90, surrounded by family at his home in Royal Oak, MI. He is survived by his loving wife, Layla, of nearly 50 years, and his children Andria (Michael) Gregory of Prescott, AZ, Suzy Jarwa of San Diego, CA, Eddie (Lindsay) El-Yussif of Birmingham, MI, and Mike (Linda) El-Yussif of Southfield, MI. Loving grandfather to Sarah Gregory, Claire Jarwa, Christian Jarwa, Nicholas El-Yussif, Angelica El-Yussif, and Terez El-Yussif.
Faruk was born on March 5, 1934, in Baghdad, Iraq. He loved and excelled at both academics and sports, an ever-proud ping pong champion. He attended the University of Baghdad, where he studied Civil Engineering, and went on to receive his PhD and DSc with a concentration in Water Resources (Bridges and Dams) at the University of Prague. He also spent time in London, England, as a Professor of Engineering.
In 1980, he accepted a job in the United States, and together, the family of six moved halfway across the world to Northern Virginia, just outside the Nation's Capitol. There, he wrapped up his vibrant career teaching physics to students who became physicians, basketball legends, a future priest, and of course, engineers like himself. He was awarded Teacher-of-the-Year many times.
Though his studies and his career took him to the tallest of bridges and the largest of dams around the world, his thoughtfully planned summer road trips across the United States with his family were his favorite travel adventures.
Later in life, Faruk enjoyed raising pigeons, watching soccer (especially Messi), and walking around town making friends wherever he went. Together, he and Layla loved to host dinners and parties for friends, and sometimes even friends-of-friends. He loved to sing, and told the best stories. He was a man full of knowledge and wisdom, of which he loved to pass on to anyone he met. He will be missed beyond measure.
