Obituary

The world feels a little emptier with the passing of our dear Mary Sheena (née Saroki) , who died peacefully on December 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 92.

Born on August 3, 1932, in Telkaif, Iraq, Mary was the fourth of five children born to Hannia and Yousif Saroki. She was a devoted sister to her late siblings Gabriel, Warina, Shamemta, and Jamila. In 1954, Mary immigrated to Detroit, where she met and married Gabriel Sheena the following year. Together, they lovingly raised four children and remained integral members of the Chaldean community.

Mary was the cherished matriarch of her family, known for her deep care and boundless devotion. A gifted home cook, she found immense joy in welcoming others into her home and sharing meals that left lasting impressions. Anyone fortunate enough to know her likely has a story about her extraordinary cooking. Her recipes, enjoyed by many, were later featured in a local Chaldean cookbook.

A woman of unwavering faith, Mary lived her life devoted to the church and loved openly and warmly through Christ. She will always be remembered for her favorite sayings "I love you too much"and "God bless you." In her free time,  she took great pride in raising funds for the Religious Sisters while enjoying her regular gatherings with friends.

Mary is survived by her four children—Joseph, Joyce, Natalie, and Mark—her daughters-in-law Fadia and Domnita, and her ten adoring grandchildren and their spouses: Gabriel, Joseph and Celine, Brooke and Ari, Madelyn, Giorgio, Veronica, Lola, Adam, Bella, and Dylan.

While her absence is deeply felt, we take comfort in imagining the gates of Heaven wide open to welcome her. The love Mary shared so generously will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
