IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Najib Hermiz
Hakim
September 5, 1937 – January 27, 2020
Najib Hermiz Hakim was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and humble servant of God; a man of great integrity who inspired those around him. After arriving to the United States as a teenager, he graduated college with a Masters of Business Administration degree, and went on to work for General Motors before establishing multiple businesses of his own. He was regarded as a respected pillar of the community.
Yet, he may have made the most impact of all, sacrificing the security and freedoms of his life in America with his cherished family, endeavoring to try to better the lives of Iraqis as a cultural advisor in the war-torn nation of his birth. This position led to meetings with officers of the highest ranking and world leaders from across the Middle East. It also came with the sacred and harrowing mission of standing up against the pervasive evils of terrorism that threatened to lay waste to all decency across the country.
When he eventually retired from his post in 2015, at the age of nearly 78 years old, he was honored for his service and given a plaque, which reads in part:
"Your support of the Senior Advisors Group and the overall OSC-I mission has been outstanding. Across thousands of Key Leader Engagements, you have been at the epicenter of policy-making at the highest levels of the Iraqi government and U.S. leadership, supporting freedom and democracy for the Iraqi people and furthering vital American interests. This tour culminates over twelve years of dedicated, brave, and loyal service…through some of the most dangerous times in Iraq. You should be extremely proud of your service."
Najib never boasted of his bravery or accomplishments. He focused on God, living always in a state of reverence and gratitude. Perhaps it was his love for our creator that made Najib's presence feel larger than life, balanced in confidence and humbleness, strength and tenderness. He had a smile that could light up a room, and the brilliance of mind to effect change for the betterment of this world.
Najib is survived by his loving wife Dorothy; children Steven, Sharon, Vincent, Eric and Renée; grandchildren Jordan, Charlie, Kyanne, Sawyer, and Ava; and brothers Mikhail and Alman Hakim. He joins by grace of Heaven his parents Hermiz and Ghazala, brothers John and Sabah, and sister Jamila.
"Blessed be the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." ~ Matthew 5:9
