Obituary

Shamamta Barash (Saroki)
Shamamta Barash (Saroki) was born in Telkaif, Iraq on November 20, 1929. She was the daughter of Yousif Saroki and Hania Meram. She was the sister of the late Gabriel Saroki, the late Jamila Dickow, the late Warina Sheena and Mary Sheena who will miss her dearly.
She was married to Dawood Barash who preceded her in death in 2017; They have five children, Sue (Haifa) (Masood) Kirma; son, Walid (Haifa Shounia); daughter Sana (Derey) Isho; son, Mazyn (Annette Hamameh); son, John (Karen Jouja); 15 grandchildren,  and 13 great grandchildren.
Shamamta immigrated to the United States on June 20, 1966. She could speak and read and write in three language (English, Arabic and Aramaic).  She was a wonderful cook and excellent seamstress but her greatest quality was her loving and generous heart. Like her husband, her love for God and a passion to help others kept her busy.  She was a humble servant of the community who would regularly lead prayer services for the sick, offer rides to those who needed them and make food for others. She was well known for her sewing and the quilts she enjoyed making for newborns.
She loved to volunteer and was a leading fundraiser for local churches and charities. She belonged to Sisters of the Sacred Heart and a woman's group that met on Thursdays for prayer and raising money for the needy.
She spent her free time attending funerals and offering prayers to families of those deceased. The funeral director of Southfield funeral home once joked about how she attended more funerals than he did.  When asked how she knew those who had passed, she would say that she didn't but wanted to make sure that someone was at the funeral to pray for their soul. Shamamta had a beautiful voice that was loved by many.  She had a special way of chanting prayers and engaging emotions in all who were present.
Shamamta was a loving caregiver to her husband for 14 years. As his condition progressed, she remained committed to keeping him in their home to continue to give him the best care.
Shamamta had a heart of gold and would take the shirt off her back and give it to anyone who needed it.  Those who had the privilege to know called her a Saint.

She is and will always be missed by all who knew her.  We leave you with her favorite sayings, "thank you, thank you, thank you, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I love you, I love you, I love you, God Bless You.
