IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Yvonne
Johnson
July 28, 1953 – November 16, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Mrs. Yvonne Johnson .
Yvonne is the only daughter out of the 5 children born to James & Sallie Lucas.
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Odell Johnson - MI High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame & MI Catholic League High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, with whom she shared 57 years of love and partnership.
She is also survived by her son, Kareem Johnson, Esq; her daughter, Khalilah Turner, M.B.A.; and her four cherished grandchildren: Amelia & Viviana Johnson - both of whom are soccer stars, Cinny Turner - swimmer, and Kamar Turner - dancer. She also leaves to morn nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
Despite being raised by parents with only a fifth-grade education, Yvonne rose above every limit placed before her; graduating as valedictorian of Mackenzie High School, attending and earning her Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, beginning her Doctorate degree, and excelling in a remarkable career as a corporate communicator. She used her voice, skill, and passion for language to write for numerous organizations and distinguished individuals, including Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Detroit Public Schools, Coleman A. Young, President Bill Clinton, and Senator Carl Levin.
She was also a dedicated post-secondary educator, a faithful servant of the Lord, and a woman who found joy in sewing handmade dolls for young girls in Africa.
Above all, Yvonne treasured her family. She delighted in simple, joyful pleasures—train rides, warm days in the sun, and the timeless sounds of Motown music.
Her life stands as a powerful reminder that your environment does not determine your potential.
As you rejoice in her memory, may your heart find comfort in her favorite hymn:
"God has smiled on me, He has set me free.
God has smiled on me, He's been good to me."
